CHICAGO — With the highest television ratings for a regular season Major League Baseball contest in 16 years, it wasn’t a matter of whether the “Field of Dreams” game would return in 2022, but who would be playing in it. It appears next year’s game will feature the Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds, according to multiple reports.
Last Thursday’s game between the Chicago White Sox and the New York Yankees drew in 5.9 million viewers across Fox and its affiliates. The inaugural game was played in Dyersville, Iowa, which served as the setting for the 1989 sports movie, “Field of Dreams.”
The game had originally been scheduled for the 2020 season, but was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
While next year’s participants haven’t officially been announced by MLB, Cubs manager David Ross may have let the cat out of the bag about his team’s involvement last week during a media session at Wrigley Field.
“We’re in that next year, right?” Ross asked when the Field of Dreams game was mentioned, reports CubsHQ.com. The reveal was met with visible surprise by a team representative and Ross attempted to walk it back after realizing his mistake.
The Iowa Cubs, the Cubs’ highest Minor League Baseball affiliate (Triple-A), play in Des Moines.
MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred has confirmed the “Field of Dreams” game will return next season and more specific information on the game is expected to be announced soon, according to reports.
