Nick Saban contract extension could be his last with Alabama football - A2Z Streaming

Nick Saban contract extension could be his last with Alabama football

Alabama football head coach Nick Saban got a contract extension through the 2029 season and it may end up being his last with the Crimson Tide.

Nick Saban is back to being the highest-paid coach in college football after signing a contract extension with Alabama football until 2030.

According to Bruce Feldman, the new deal runs through February of 2030. Technically it just extends his previous deal by one season while bumping up his pay to $11.7 million per year, ahead of Georgia’s Kirby Smart.

Alabama had every reason to make Saban that highly paid. He’s probably still underpaid. The bigger question is how much longer the head coach will remain with the Tide.

“Our family is very happy to agree to a contract extension with The University of Alabama,” Saban wrote in a statement. “Terry and I are very appreciative of the unmatched commitment the University has shown to this football program and our family over the last 15-plus years. This is our home, and we look forward to finishing our career at Alabama.

“I’ve said this before, but the most fulfilling part of our job is seeing the players that represent our program grow and develop, not only in football, but more importantly in what they have been able to accomplish in their lives because of their involvement in our program. We want to thank the Board of Trustees, Chancellor St. John, President Bell, Director of Athletics Greg Byrne, our athletics administration, the football staff and the whole University community for their support.”

That statement is definitely straightforward, but it’s telling that Saban talked about looking forward to finishing his career at Alabama.

Saban is turning 71 years old in October. He’ll be 79 by the time this extension reaches its conclusion. The likelihood of him extending it out further feels tiny. More pay raises could certainly come but the years are already pretty far out there.

Then again, Joe Paterno coached until he was 84 and his exit wasn’t a clean retirement. So maybe Saban does have his eye on coaching another five years beyond 2029. Either way, we know he wants to be at Alabama when he does decide to retire.
