The New York Yankees started off the season on a torrid pace. While it was expected that they would drop off a bit for the rest of the season, their dropoff has been substantial.
Even with winning their last two games in a row entering Tuesday, they are 5-14 since August 2. They are 17-27 in their last 44 so it has been going on for a bit. That’s why the Yankees made some moves at the trade deadline but obviously, it has not worked for them and they seemingly don’t have a shot in the dark to get to the World Series, let alone win it.
Here are the three biggest trade deadline regrets killing the Yankees’ shot at the World Series.

1. Trading away Jordan Montgomery/Not trading for Pablo Lopez
The Yankees traded away left-handed starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery to the St. Louis Cardinals for outfielder Harrison Bader. Bader has been on the injured list for his entire tenure with the Cardinals thus far. Meanwhile, Montgomery has been the best starter in baseball.
In his four starts with the Cardinals, he is 4-0 with a 0.35 ERA. He had a complete game shutout on Monday against the Cubs in which he only allowed a single hit. His first start with the Cardinals was actually against the Yankees and he went five shutout innings in a 1-0 win.
Part of the reason why they traded Montgomery was that they thought they were getting Marlins starting pitcher Pablo López but just a few minutes before the 4 PM E.T. trade deadline, the Marlins backed out.
Lopez has a losing record with the Marlins this season because of their awful offense but he has a 3.83 ERA in 24 starts. Had they traded for him, their starting rotation might be in a better spot but it didn’t happen.
