Eddie Hearn ‘will meet Conor McGregor in Dublin on Monday’ after the UFC star offered to save Katie Taylor’s Croke Park dream… with the Irish fighter’s homecoming against Amanda Serrano in doubt due to a £620,000 funding gap

  • McGregor has offered to sponsor Katie Taylor’s rematch versus Amanda Serrano
  • Taylor wants to fight at Croke Park but there is a funding gap of £620,000

Eddie Hearn is planning to hold talks with Conor McGregor about sponsoring Katie Taylor‘s Croke Park fight.

McGregor has offered to sponsor Taylor’s proposed rematch against Amanda Serrano.

Taylor won via split decision when the pair faced each other at Madison Square Garden last year, and there have been talks regarding a potential rematch, with May 20 the proposed date for the fight to take place.

Hearn initially ruled out Croke Park as the venue for the fight due to extra security costs, with there being a funding gap of £620,000.

McGregor is eager for the fight to be held at Croke Park, though, and will meet Hearn on Monday.

Hearn said: ‘I spoke to him a few times and I will be flying out to see him on Monday. Our date is May 20 which is immovable because it’s built around the DAZN schedule.’

Hearn joked that the meeting might be at McGregor’s Black Forge Inn after the UFC star contacted him on social media last week.

‘On Monday I’m hoping to fly into Ireland, to the Black Forge. We have been communicating on Twitter messages. I noticed he followed me on Twitter and I saw his tweet that he wants to make it happen. He loves Katie Taylor and he would love to help get it at Croke Park.

‘I haven’t given up but there is probably a 6 or €700,000 deficit of where we need to be. Maybe he can fill that. But it’s not a publicity stunt, I think he feels like it would be cool to be a part of that.’

McGregor had wrote on Twitter: ‘The extra security bill is 500k to have Katie Taylor fight at Croke Park? I will sponsor the event to see this happen.

Taylor would relish the opportunity to fight at Croke Park, which has a capacity of 82,000.

The current undisputed lightweight champion, Taylor has held the WBA title since 2017, the IBF title since 2018, and the WBC, WBO and The Ring magazine titles since 2019.

Taylor is hugely popular in Ireland and is credited with helping to raise the profile of women’s boxing.

She has won all 22 of her professional fights so far.
