‘I hope he doesn’t go easy on me’: Blind boxer will take on a full-sighted opponent – despite only being able to see THREE FEET in front of him – in upcoming charity bout

  • Thomas Seres requires a cane to walk and cannot see three feet in front of him
  • Money earned from Seres’ charity fight will be donated to Cancer Research UK
  • The 23-year-old suffers from severe congenital glaucoma which affects his eyes

Thomas Seres – who is registered as blind – will take on a fully-sighted opponent in a charity boxing match next month.

Seres suffers from severe congenital glaucoma and is set for a huge challenge in his debut fight when he comes up against a full-sighted opponent in March.

But that has not stopped the 23-year-old from promising ‘his all’ in the ring, despite needing a cane to walk and being unable to see more than three feet in front of him.

Seres remains confident of his chances, and has called for his foe not to hold back, warning that ‘he’ll pay’ if he receives any special treatment.

Rather than an exhibition fight, the Barnsley-based boxer wants a full-blooded affair to mark his first venture onto the canvas.

‘I’ve always wanted to box but didn’t think I could until I joined a boxing gym,’ Seres revealed to the Sun.

‘I’ll give it my best in the fight — win, lose or draw. Boxing’s quite an up-close sport so that’s in my favour, but I’ll struggle seeing some of the punches coming in.

‘I hope he doesn’t go easy on me for being blind.

‘He’ll pay if he does. I have a knockout punch.’

Despite the problems with his sight, Seres earned himself a level two boxing certificate in early January, and is currently honing his craft three days a week.

Seres has undergone more than 60 operations since birth in order to manage the rare condition that affects his eyes.

In an extraordinary show of courage, he will face his full-sighted rival in order to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

‘From when he was born we thought that something was wrong,’ Seres’ mother Kelly told the Barnsley Chronicle.

‘He had his first operation at two weeks old and since then he’s had more than 60 and he has little vision.

‘He’s been going to The Combat Academy in Barugh Green for a few months and he’s always wanted to take part in an event.

‘We lost his grandad to stomach cancer around three or four years ago and he was very close to him.

‘We had to wait for approval but we found out this week that he’d be able to fight – I’m so proud of him.

‘He’s just hoping to raise as much money as possible.’
