It took a second-half comeback from the Chiefs to secure the victory in the biggest game of the season. They fell behind in the first half, 24-14, as the Eagles dominated time of possession. A Kelce touchdown pass and a Nick Bolton scoop-and-score weren’t enough to keep up with Jalen Hurts and Philadelphia’s ball-control offense.
Things changed after the break for Rihanna’s halftime performance. Mahomes was at his best despite aggravating his injured ankle in the first half. He led the Chiefs on a 10-play, 75-yard statement drive to pull back within three. Then KC’s defense responded by holding the Eagles to a field goal and a punt on their first two drives of the second half.
Mahomes hit Kadarius Toney for a touchdown to take a 28-27 lead before Toney’s huge punt return set up another Chiefs touchdown to Skyy Moore.
The Eagles had a response and tied the game at 35 after a two-point conversion. However, Mahomes made sure Hurts didn’t get the ball back with enough time to change the outcome of the game. The Chiefs QB engineered a drive, including a 26-yard scramble, to put his team in field goal range, though Eagles fans will complain about a controversial holding call that extended the drive. Harrison Butker finished things off with the game-winning kick with eight seconds on the clock. Then the celebrations began.
