Conor Benn suffers WBC rankings blow with the governing body refusing to fast track him into their welterweight ratings despite months of propaganda pleading his innocence
- The welterweight Conor Benn was hoping to be reinstated into WBC’s rankings
- WBC’s refusal to do so comes as a blow to the fighter who pleads his innocence
- Has been confirmed that they are not close to a finding on his failed tests
Conor Benn has not been reinstated in the latest world boxing rankings despite propaganda that he was about to be cleared of drugs offences.
The WBC’s refusal to fast track Benn into their welterweight ratings comes as a heavy blow to his campaign of innocence after failing two drugs tests which caused the scandalously late cancellation of his fight with Chris Eubank Jr. Benn’s lawyers filed a 270 page document to purporting to excuse those tests and he has led speculation that he was about to be cleared.
But there is no place for him in this week’s revised WBC rankings and the president of world boxing’s premier controlling body confirmed they are not close to a finding.
Mauricio Sulaiman says: ‘That speculation is unfounded. We are still conducting due process required by our Clean Boxing Programme.
‘There have been attempts to apply pressure via the media to come to a quick conclusion. But we will not be pressurised. Our priority is to come to the right determination.’
WBC’s refusal to reinstate Conor Benn into their rankings is indicative of a much longer process
The fighter failed two drugs tests which led to the late abandoning of his fight with Chris Eubank Jr.
The WBC are studying the adverse test results returned by VADA.
Whatever that outcome, British Boxing Board of Control general secretary has confirmed that Benn will not be licensed to box again in this country unless he is cleared by UKAD, who have yet to be given access to Benn’s ‘evidence’.
But the London welterweight’s promoter Eddie Hearn has warned that whatever the legal outcome he ‘will never be regarded now’ as a ring hero.
Eubank moved on to fight Liverpool’s Liam Smith and has triggered already his contractual right to a rematch after that defeat, possibly to be staged at Anfield.
