Virginia led the way as the highest-ranked seed for the ACC in March Madness this year, joined by Miami, Duke, NC State and Pitt in the field of 68.
How has the ACC performed in the opening rounds?
ACC March Madness Record after First Round
On Day 1 of the Round of 32, the ACC record in the NCAA Tournament was 4-3 with Miami and Pittsburgh still to play on Sunday.
No. 5 seed Duke’s run in the tournament was cut short in the Second Round by No. 4 seed Tennessee, 65-52.
Pitt opened the tournament with a win for the ACC, getting by No. 11 seed Mississippi State in the First Four on Tuesday.
Duke nabbed win No. 2 with a 74-51 victory in their 5-12 matchup with Oral Roberts.
However, the conference was hit with some embarrassment soon after as No. 4 seed Virginia fell to No. 13 seed Furman in a major upset.
No. 5 seed Miami added to the win total with a 63-56 win over No. 12 Drake on Friday.
Then No. 11 NC State couldn’t work some upset magic of their own as they lost to No. 6 seed Creighton, 72-63.
No. 11 seed Pitt closed out the first round with a shocker as they topped No. 6 seed Iowa State, 59-41.
The ACC is used to fielding contenders. Virginia won the last championship for the conference in 2019 while North Carolina and Duke have won titles in the last decade.
Of course, the landscape looks a bit different now after the retirements of the likes of Roy Williams, Mike Krzyzewski and Jim Boeheim.
