  •  Kambosos wins in controversy

Australian boxer Joe Goodall stunned the boxing world by stopping the highly-rated Stephan Shaw on Saturday night.

Fighting on the undercard to the George Kambosos-Maxi Hughes IBO world title bout, the Aussie heavyweight improved his record to 10-1-1 after flooring the American in the sixth round.

Touted as a possible future title contender ‘Big Shot’ Shaw (18-2, 13KO) was dropped twice by Goodall, a 500-1 underdog, in the sixth round.

Goodall’s win will reinvigorate his career which felt the sting of a setback last fight losing to highly regarded Aussie Justis Huni (7-0).

Huni has a win over Paul Gallen in that tally also.

This shock win over Shaw should get Goodall further US bouts now.

Man mountain Goodall, who has won a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games must surely be considered in the top two of Australia’s heavyweights now.

Said his excited manager Steve Scanlon after the bout, ‘Joe has beaten an American who was ranked in the world’s top 30 before this fight.

‘This bloke (Shaw) has never been put down in his career and Joe made him quit.

‘It’s an extraordinary result for Australian boxing.’

Meanwhile, Kambosos in his return bout won a controversial match up on points against Hughes.

The fight could have easily gone to Hughes, the defending IBO champion, who largely made his Aussie rival miss with his wild, lunging shots, but Kambosos did enough to win over two judges.

One of them by a head-shaking big margin 117-111.

Now, Kambosos (21-2),  is looking at a world-title blockbuster with Vasiliy Lomachenko, the man he hoped to originally face last year before the Ukraine war triggered a showdown with Devon Haney which the Aussie lost.
