George Kambosos will head to the USA in order to get his world title belts back… with ‘Ferocious’ insisting he will ‘seriously put a beating’ on English fighter Maxi Hughes
- Kambosos will fight Maxi Hughes for IBO title
- July showdown will take place in Las Vegas
- Bout will be Aussie’s first fight since Haney loss
Former world champion boxer George Kambosos will head to America for an IBO world-title fight against England’s Maxi Hughes, in an attempt to get his contender status back on track.
No formal announcement has been made, but it’s understood Kambosos and Hughes will square off on Saturday, July 29 in Las Vegas Nevada.
The bout will be Kambosos’ first fight since back-to-back unanimous decision losses to American Devin Haney last year.
The fight was originally planned to take place in Australia in June, but broadcast negotiations have since moved the bout to the States.
Kambosos etched his name in Australian boxing folklore with a stunning points victory over Teofimo Lopez in their 2021 unified lightweight championship grudge match by stripping him of his WBO, WBA and IBF titles.

The IBO title is not recognised by everyone as a legitimate world title, but Kambosos is determined to win it and put himself forward for a shot at the other titles.
‘I will stop him,’ Kambosos told News Corp.
‘I’m not just going to beat him, I will knock him out or seriously put a beating on this guy.
‘He is a crafty veteran, so I won’t take him lightly.
‘It’s a huge opportunity for him, too, so I know how he will look at it, but I’m considering victory and nothing else.
‘I’m not even worried about another loss. I am levels above Maxi Hughes. There is nothing he can do that I didn’t see against Devin Haney, let alone the 22 fights I’ve had in my career.
‘I will win the fight and Ferocious will be back.’

Many believed Kambosos would retire from boxing after his second loss to Haney in their rematch on October 15th, but the Sydney-sider believes he’s far from done in the sport and is intent on proving it
The Aussie has only had two professional losses in his professional career and believes he will be back among the very top of his ultra-competitive lightweight division in a short while.
‘When I win this fight, I’m back in line for the IBF world title,’ said Kambosos.
‘I’m a big-name fighter and I still deserve the biggest fighters.’
