The bruise brothers! Aussie twins set to fight for boxing world titles just a week apart in historic moment: ‘It’s incredible how the stars align’

  • Aussie brothers to fight for world titles
  • Moloney brothers to fight a week apart
  • Fights haven’t been officially announced

Australia’s boxing twin brothers Andrew and Jason Moloney are closer to making a lifelong dream a reality after each being granted world title shots just a week apart from each other.

Jason will fight for the WBO bantamweight strap against Filipino Vincent Astrolabio in Stockton California on May 13, while Andrew challenges Japanese opponent Junto Nakatani for the vacant WBO junior bantamweight title in Las Vegas a week afterward.

Like Steve and Mark Waugh, Kevin and Kerrod Walters, Brett and Josh Morris – the Moloney brothers will be able to cement their names among the top twins in Australian sports.

Fight promotion company Top Rank hasn’t officially announced the blockbuster fights, but the Sun-Herald claims behind-the-scenes agreements have already been reached.

‘Hopefully the world and Australia will recognise how special this is,’ Jason told the Herald. ‘Two identical twins with identical records are fighting for the exact same world title only one week apart, only one weight division apart.

‘It’s incredible how the stars align, and I think this is meant to be. For 19 years, me and Andrew have worked our arses off and dedicated our lives to this sport.

‘Now we have the opportunity to make it all worthwhile and I can’t wait for it to happen.

‘To have two brothers as world champions is an amazing story.

‘Hopefully, we get the respect and support we deserve. It’s incredible to have [potentially] two world champions from Australia, and they are both twin brothers. It’s a very special story.’

Andrew held the WBA world title for a short while at 115lbs (52.2kg) but fell short in his controversial trilogy with Joshua Franco in 2020 and 2021.

The Melbourne-born fighter has looked better in career-best form since then, stringing together four impressive wins.

‘It was just so disappointing when I lost that title,’ he said. ‘Things happened how they did and now I look back at it as a blessing, I’ve developed so much as a fighter over the last few years.

‘Having that as motivation has improved me as a fighter and I feel I’m in a place now where I’m ready to fight for a world title and make sure I win that belt.’

It’s been an outstanding start to the year for Aussie boxing with Tim Tszyu’s world title breakthrough in Sydney, which sets him up for a showdown with undisputed king Jermell Charlo in June.

If the Maloney twins have their way, Australia will have two more world champions before that happens.
