St. Louis Cardinals have several top prospects poised to make their debuts in the coming years. Who are Cardinals fans likely to see next?
The St. Louis Cardinals have drafted and traded well in recent years to build up their farm system. Several of those prospects are making noise this season in the minor leagues, specifically AAA Memphis. They are making their cases to join the Cardinals sooner rather than later.
The Cardinals have a pretty great roster in St. Louis but as the season goes along, it’s easy to see reinforcements will be needed.
Starting pitching has been a huge concern for the Cardinals due to injuries or needs for rest. Sometimes batters need to recharge and the offense could use a boost from one of the hot young bats in the minors.
Just today, the Cardinals announced they are bringing up one of the big-name prospects in Juan Yepez.
Infielder Edmundo Sosa has been placed on the injured list for Yepez.
Prior to the season, Yepez was thought to be a player who could begin the season with St. Louis as an option to back up Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado, as well as be a designated hitter. Instead, the team signed Albert Pujols for designated hitting, backup at first base, and overall veteran leadership.
With the obvious need, the Cardinals are using that to reward Yepez and give him a shot.
Yepez came to the Cardinals in the deal that traded Matt Adams to the Atlanta Braves.
Having hit his ninth home run of the season prior to being called up, Yepez is hitting .280/.326/.634 with a +144 wRC. In addition to the nine homers, he has an ISO of .354, five doubles, eight runs, and 23 RBI.
Bringing up Yepez, and using him, will definitely be a spark to the Cardinals’ offense. This should be fun for Cardinals fans.
