Cowboy Cerrone holds back tears during UFC 274 media day (Video)

Cowboy Cerrone gets emotional during his UFC 274 media day interview.

Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone is a pioneer of MMA that made his pro-MMA debut in 2006. After a standout tenure with WEC, Cerrone signed with the UFC in 2011. Eleven years later, Cowboy is tied for the most UFC wins and has the second most finishes in UFC history.

Unfortunately, Cerrone has struggled against the next generation, losing his last five fights. Cerrone decided to take off twelve months and rethink his approach to fighting. Now that Cowboy is ready to return, he will take on UFC veteran Joe Lauzon at UFC 274.

During the UFC 274 media day, Cerrone reflected on why he continues to fight and what motivates him. When Cowboy mentioned fighting in front of his son, he held back tears. “I can’t wait to walk out of that tunnel and see the look on his face. He knows finally what I do,” said Cerrone. “It’s crazy how emotional I get.”

Cerrone has always been a hardcore guy that loves to fight. Seeing the raw emotion come out when talking about his son was inspirational. Cerrone seems to have a new mindset with added motivation heading into his return at UFC 274. If his media day interview wasn’t enough, the fact this will most likely be Cowboy’s last fight should make this must-see for hardcore MMA fans.

Cowboy Cerrone and Joe Lauzon organized the UFC 274 matchup themselves

Most UFC fighters do not have control of switching their fight days with ease. Yet, when you’ve been around forever, like Cerrone and Lauzon, it’s easier to get what you want. During the UFC 274 media day, Cerrone discussed how this fight materialized.

“When they offered the name, I called Joe and said let’s do this. Then they put us on April 30th, and I called Joe, saying that’s not gonna work,” said Cerrone. “This is not an APEX fight, and Joe said, what are you gonna do? I told him I’m gonna call Dana, and you back me up.”

Hearing Cerrone and Lauzon get what they want was a nice touch to the UFC 274 media day. Both fighters have been through wars and helped grow the sport of MMA. Seeing these two legends go toe-to-toe will be an honor.
