Dak Prescott’s backup is back and that is a great thing for the Cowboys

Cooper Rush is returning to the Dallas Cowboys to continue serving as Dak Prescott’s backup.

With Cooper Rush coming back to the Dallas Cowboys on a two-year deal, America’s Team will be in good hands should Dak Prescott succumb to injury at any point next season.

Rush could have earned himself a ton of money on the open market after going 4-1 filling in for Prescott last season. Although he may have only been able to go to a bad team with any real hopes of being a starter, Rush read the room quite well and is going back to a team and a place he knows like the back of his hand. With the first year of it being fully guaranteed, good for Rush here.

This move does not take the Cowboys over the top, but it ensures that they will have a high floor.

Dallas does play in a very difficult NFC East, but keep in mind that teams do not repeat in-division.

Cooper Rush re-ups with Dallas Cowboys to still serve as Dak Prescott’s backup

Even if the Cowboys parted ways with former offensive coordinator Kellen Moore at the end of the season, Dallas is still led by an offensive-minded head coach in Mike McCarthy. He may be more hands-on in that department this season. Frankly, he can, and probably has to. He needs to take advantage of Dan Quinn still somehow being on his staff as a defensive coordinator at this point.

It may be a bit of a stretch, but Dallas has every reason to believe that it can get to the NFC Championship Game with this current cast. The smart money is on the Philadelphia Eagles to be the team that suffers from the Super Bowl hangover. While the Washington Commanders may be interesting, we have to wonder how close the New York Giants are to the ceiling with Daniel Jones.

Ultimately, Rush’s return to Dallas should give Cowboys fans everywhere great confidence that the bottom isn’t going to fall out of the bag for the next two seasons at quarterback. It may hit the fan elsewhere, but it is hard to see the Cowboys being bad at any point in the next two campaigns. They have a slim Super Bowl window, but for the time being, you can honestly say that it is open.

Good job by the Cowboys here to ensure that they will remain stable at the quarterback position.
