Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen acknowledged that to make it to the Super Bowl, they have to find a way to get past the Kansas City Chiefs in the playoffs.
For the second time in four years, the Kansas City Chiefs are hoisting the Lombardi Trophy at their Super Bowl victory parade. This past Sunday, the Chiefs defeated the Philadelphia Eagles 38-35 after trailing 24-14 at halftime.
Ahead of the season, the Chiefs weren’t expected by some to make it to the big game, given the amount of talent added to the AFC West. Not to mention, the Buffalo Bills were among the heavy favorites to win the big game heading into the season. Yet, the Bills fell short of that goal, getting eliminated in the Divisional Round by the Cincinnati Bengals.
During an appearance on Kyle Brandt’s Basement, Bills quarterback Josh Allen acknowledged that if they want to make it to the Super Bowl and win it, they’ll have to get past the Chiefs.
“To be the best, you’ve got to beat the best,” Allen said, h/t NFL.com. “We didn’t get that opportunity this year in the playoffs. Or we didn’t take advantage of our opportunities, I guess you could say.”
Josh Allen acknowledges Bills need to get past Chiefs to win Super Bowl
Allen first faced the Chiefs in the playoffs in the 2020 season. In the AFC Championship Game, Kansas City decisively beat Buffalo by the score of 38-24. Allen threw for 287 yards, two touchdowns and one interception, completing 28-for-48 pass attempts and getting sacked four times for a loss of 53 yards. Mahomes, meanwhile, completed all but nine pass attempts (29-for-38) for 325 yards and three touchdowns.
In 2021, the Bills and Chiefs faced off in the Divisional Round, which saw insane back-and-forth action in the final two minutes. That was the game in which the Chiefs marched into field goal range with just 13 seconds on the clock and tied it on a 49-yard field goal attempt by Harrison Butker. The Bills were unable to get a chance to win in overtime, as the Chiefs won the coin toss, and tight end Travis Kelce scored a touchdown to give Kansas City the 42-36 victory.
Allen had the game of his career in that game, completing 27-of-37 pass attempts for 329 yards and four touchdowns while running for 68 yards on 11 carries. The thing is, Mahomes threw for 378 yards and three touchdowns (33-of-44 on pass attempts), while running for 69 yards and a touchdown on seven carries.
The Bills seemingly were on track to make a run in the playoffs. However, they narrowly pulled out a victory over the Miami Dolphins, who were led by third-string quarterback Skylar Thompson. But when the Bills reached the Divisional Round, they were handily defeated by the Bengals by the score of 27-10.
Allen and the Bills will look to make a push for the Super Bowl next season. But, realistically, they will have to get past the Chiefs when it matters the most, aka. the playoffs.
