Today’s MLS news includes the league’s commissioner Don Garber speaking about the prospect of signing Lionel Messi from PSG, Romeo Beckham could be set to stay with Brentford and LAFC claimed a late draw against Philadelphia Union in the CONCACAF Champions League.

MLS news: Could Lionel Messi join Inter Miami?

The talk of Lionel Messi signing for Inter Miami has gone quiet recently. The PSG forward has also been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia and there has been speculation about a sensational return to Barcelona.

MLS commissioner Garber has remained optimistic about bringing Messi to MLS, telling CBS Sports the player “can be bigger than any athlete of any sport that has ever played here in the United States.

“We will work very hard with Miami, who is the team that is hoping to be able to sign him, to come up with a program for him that will allow him to establish a legacy that I think could be unprecedented globally.”

When David Beckham signed for LA Galaxy part of the deal was that he could have his own expansion team which he took up in Miami. If Beckham got his own club then it would take something mega to bring Messi to MLS.

Barcelona also face a challenge to sign Messi with the club facing financial difficulties. The Daily Mail has reported that “Barcelona’s first moves to reduce their wage bill to comply with LaLiga’s Fair Play rules have been unsuccessful with both Franck Kessie and Andreas Christensen saying no to a salary decrease.”

With Barcelona in a difficult position financially, this could be the perfect opportunity for MLS to swoop in and complete the biggest signing in North American soccer since Pele joined the New York Cosmos back in the days of the NASL.

MLS news: Romeo Beckham could stay at Brentford

Romeo Beckham has impressed whilst on loan at Brentford from Inter Miami this season. He has done so well that The Telegraph has reported that “Brentford are keen to keep Romeo Beckham.”

It would make sense for him to stay with the London side with the ambition of representing their first team. Brentford are currently 9th in the Premier League having defeated Chelsea last night. The Bees are a club that is definitely on the up and staying with them would be an attractive proposition.

Inter Miami are enduring a difficult campaign. Phil Neville’s side has lost their last six MLS games and they are 14th in the Eastern Conference. The Herons did beat Miami FC in the U.S. Open Cup last night but they still needed penalties to do so.

MLS news: Advantage LAFC vs Philadelphia Union

LAFC claimed another notable result against the Philadelphia Union last night as Kellyn Acosta’s 91st-minute goal leveled their CONCACAF Champions League semi-final at 1-1. Away goals still count in the competition so as it stands LAFC will be heading through.

The two sides still have to meet at the BMO Stadium next week to see which side will progress to the final. However, Steve Cherundolo’s side will fancy their chances in the home tie.

Philadelphia was the team that LAFC beat in the final of MLS Cup last year. That game needed Gareth Bale to equalise late on which forced the penalty shootout in which LAFC were victorious. Jim Curtin’s side will be sick of conceding another late equalizer to the team from Los Angeles.
