Oleksandr Usyk defeats Anthony Joshua in rematch (video) by Jeremy Herriges

Twitter reacted to the highly-anticipated rematch between Oleksandr Usyk and Anthony Joshua on Aug. 20.

Back on Sept. 25, 2021, Oleksandr Usyk defeated Anthony Joshua by unanimous decision to win the WBA (Super), WBO, IBF, and IBO heavyweight championships. Nearly one year later, Usyk had the chance to prove himself once again against Joshua, as a defense of his titles would bring him to a perfect 20-0 boxing record. Meanwhile, Joshua was looking to regain those very championships that he had won back from Andy Ruiz Jr. back in late 2019.

On Saturday, Aug. 20, it was Usyk who was victorious once again, defeating Joshua by split decision to retain his heavyweight titles. Judges scored the fight 115-113 and 116-112 for Usyk, while one lone judge called it 115-113 for Joshua.

The story will be about Joshua losing again, but for Usyk to pull out a performance like that considering what he and his nation have been through over the past 5 months is truly remarkable and the emotion on his face afterwards shows that.

Usyk def. Joshua by split decision 115-113, 116-112- 113-115.

Usyk just far too good. Ridiculous engine & activity; whatever AJ or anyone wants to do against him, they don’t get the chance. Mentally exhausting.

A better go from AJ, but only man who could beat Usyk is prob Fury.

Great fight. Joshua so much better than in the first meeting but Usyk in a different class. So good.

Oleksandr Usyk is genuinely one of the most technical fighters we’ve ever seen. Fury vs Usyk has to happen

Joshua did make things interesting in the later rounds, with the ninth round being his most aggressive and put Usyk in danger. Yet, Usyk dominated Rounds 10-12 to pick up his 20th win of the season.

For those that were wondering just how surgical Usyk was in the later rounds, Dan Canobbio of Jomboy Media points out that the champ landed 79 shots in rounds 10-12. Joshua was only able to land 29 in that span.

With his titles successfully defended, it will remain to be seen who will be Usyk’s next challenger. As for Joshua, where does he go from here. We should get those answers in the very near future.
