If Texas has Quinn Ewers back in time for next week’s game, the Longhorns can win Red River.

Even if Quinn Ewers does not play on Saturday night vs. West Virginia, the Texas starting quarterback could be ready to rock next week for Red River vs. Oklahoma.

ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported on Saturday morning that “Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers continues to ramp up his recovery from a shoulder injury with the notion of returning for next week’s game against rival Oklahoma.”

Ewers has not played for the Longhorns since suffering his shoulder injury three weeks ago when the Alabama Crimson Tide came to Austin back in Week 2.

Texas might already have two losses on the year (Alabama, Texas Tech), but Ewers’ return could have massive implications on how Red River goes vs. a reeling Oklahoma Sooners team.

Texas football star quarterback Quinn Ewers could return in time for Red River

With OU having already lost to Kansas State last week and having a miserable time containing the TCU offense this week, the Sooners could be a two-loss team as well before next weekend’s massive rivalry game in Dallas. Even if Texas and Oklahoma are unable to get to the conference title bout in nearby Arlington in early December, they are joining the SEC together in a few years.

While Hudson Card has filled in admirably for the injured Ewers, it is so beyond paramount for him to gain and play with confidence in the second half of the season. Texas is not a serious contender for much of anything this year. It is imperative for Ewers to thrive when he is out there, as it will propel him into his second year as the starter, thus creating a two-year gap with Arch Manning.

Unless Texas devolves into more monkey business shenanigans in the better part of conference play, the prince of America’s royal football family will be enrolling in Austin in January. Obviously, the Mannings would prefer for Arch to redshirt in 2023. However, if Ewers is shaky or unable to play much at all, that creates the type of confusion that might cause Manning to flip last minute.

If Ewers is able to return next week and win Red River, Texas will be one step closer to being back.
