Rory MacDonald got a huge win over Brett Cooper to kick off the PFL’s 2022 season.
The Pro Fighters League signed Rory MacDonald after a successful run in Bellator, hoping that he’d be a huge star for the brand. His debut season with PFL in 2021 didn’t go as planned, going just 1-2 in the promotion. So it’s got to feel good for MacDonald who opened up the 2022 season with a rare-naked choke submission win over Brett Cooper.
The fight didn’t last long, and MacDonald showed that his change in camps may just pay off. He got Cooper on the ground mid-way through the first and started hammering him with shots. Cooper covered up but gave up his neck, and MacDonald snatched that like a free beer at a baseball game.
MacDonald now gets six points and sits atop the PFL’s welterweight standings.
Rory MacDonald needs to dominate the PFL’s 2022 season
Ever since his tie to Jon Fitch back in Bellator, MacDonald has questioned his desire to fight at times. It’s clearly a mental issue why MacDonald loses as often as he does, as he’s clearly more talented than anyone he’s ever fought. He’s only 32-years-old and while he has a lot of damage on his body, he’s still very much in his prime. He needs a big year out of the PFL if he hopes to not go down as a one-hit-wonder with his lone title win being in Bellator.
The PFL also needs him to do well, as he’s marketable and well-liked, and has close ties with MMA legends. If the PFL can get him winning, then they’ll be able to rely on more than just Kayla Harrison.
