Here is what the San Francisco 49ers’ running back depth chart following their trade with the Carolina Panthers for Christian McCaffrey.
The San Francisco 49ers were not spending their Thursday night watching the rival Arizona Cardinals. Instead, they were negotiating a trade that would help them hold back the Cardinals as they chase the NFC West title.
In an absolute blockbuster, the 49ers acquired running back Christian McCaffrey from the Carolina Panthers in exchange for multiple draft picks. With that, McCaffrey now gets to play alongside quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, wide receiver Deebo Samuel, and tight end George Kelce.
Now with the addition of McCaffrey, how does the depth chart look?

When healthy, McCaffrey is going to take all of the snaps. Yet, there is the possibility that head coach Kyle Shanahan could have McCaffrey and Jeff Wilson Jr. on the football field at the exact same time. Let’s not forget, McCaffrey is a dangerous pass-catcher.
Somewhere, Garoppolo has a huge smile on his face, as he gets to hand off and pass the football to McCaffrey for the remainder of the season.
While he was limited to just 10 games through the 2020 and 2021 seasons, McCaffrey has played in all six games for the Panthers this season. He ran for 393 yards and two touchdowns on 85 carries, while catching 33-of-43 targets for 277 yards and a touchdown.
With the NFC West wild open, the 49ers decided to throw all of their chips to the center of the table to add McCaffrey to give them an edge over the Cardinals, Seattle Seahawks, and the defending Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams.
