New York Mets starting pitcher Max Scherzer had a first-inning he would like to have back in Game 1 vs. the San Diego Padres.
For the first time since 2016, the New York Mets hosted a postseason baseball game. Clinching the top Wild Card berth, the Mets earned home field advantage against the San Diego Padres in their best of three series.
Mets manager Buck Showalter called upon Max Scherzer to get the start for Game 1 on Friday night. He was the team’s top free agent acquisition this past offseason, after all. Scherzer, however, had an inning he would probably like to have back.
Scherzer surrendered a single to Jurickson Profar in the first at-bat of the game. Despite striking out Juan Soto and forcing Manny Machado to fly out, Scherzer surrendered a two run homer to Josh Bell to put the Mets in a 2-0 hole.

Twitter users, well, started typing out messages criticizing and mocking Scherzer for giving up two runs in the first inning.
Max Scherzer is the most overrated pitcher in baseball

Scherzer missing spots over the middle of the plate. DeGrom been having same issue. Getting behind and then missing over the plate. Been frustrating to watch.

Terrible start for Scherzer, earn your damn money and dont allow another run

The inning could have been much, much worse for the Mets. But, a 2-0 deficit is pretty easy to overcome. It is all up to New York’s bats to bring some runs home.
UPDATE: It got much worse for Scherzer, as he surrendered seven runs in four innings. That is the most runs he has allowed in a postseason game in his career.
