The top three moments of MMA veteran Cub Swanson’s UFC tenure.
Cub Swanson is a UFC Hall of Famer and an MMA icon and at UFC Vegas 62, 38-year-old will face 28-year-old Jonathan Martinez. This bout will mark Swanson’s first UFC fight at bantamweight as he moves down from his familiar featherweight division. Here are Swanson’s three most iconic MMA moments.
1. Cub Swanson’s win over Charles Oliveira
In a moment now suspended in UFC history, Swanson defeated future lightweight champion Charles Oliveira in a 146-pound catchweight bout for UFC 152. At this monumental event in Toronto, various high-profile showdowns took place, including Joseph Benavidez vs. Demetrious Johnson, Michael Bisping vs. Brian Stann, and Matt Hamill vs. Roger Hollett. Unfortunately, many fans point to this fight as one of Oliveira’s worst performances in the UFC.
2. Cub Swanson’s win over Dustin Poirier
UFC London at the Wembley Arena in London, England, Swanson defeated Dustin “The Diamond” Poirier by unanimous decision to advance his status in the featherweight division. This battle was awarded among Tapology’s Best Fights of 2013.
3. Cub Swanson’s two battles against Frankie Edgar
From 2014 to 2018, Swanson lost two high-stakes fights against “The Answer” Frankie Edgar. In the first fight, Dana White mentioned a title shot for Swanson if he were to defeat Edgar. Unfortunately, Swanson lost the one-sided fight to Edgar via submission in the final seconds of the fifth round. In their second meeting four years later, Swanson would again lose a one-sided battle against Edgar via unanimous decision.
This Saturday, Swanson will look to gain his first-ever win as a bantamweight and his second consecutive win since he defeated Darren Elkins in Dec. 2021.
