The Vanderbilt Commodores likely only needed one win in the SEC Tournament to lock up a spot in March Madness, but they’ve got more than just that one. Yesterday they took down Kentucky, 80-73 in Nashville to advance to this semifinal matchup with Texas A&M. The second seeded Aggies beat the No. 10 seed, Arkansas yesterday and now face the No. 6 Vanderbilt.
Texas A&M is the favorite in this one, but Vanderbilt is feeling right at home in Nashville and Jerry Stackhouse’s team might just rip through the SEC Tournament.

Vanderbilt is without their best player, Liam Robbins and yet they just keep winning. Though yesterday, they didn’t have any business winning the game against Kentucky, other than the fact that they shot the absolute lights out. Kentucky outrebounded them, 43-26 and the Wildcats had 21 offensive boards. Vandy also had 12 turnovers and only forced 13, in fact they only had 53 field goal attempts to 66 from Kentucky. Both teams shot the same number of threes and free throws, but Vandy made 10/25 compared to the 6/25 Kentucky had from behind the arc and the Commodores hit seven more free-throws.
You want a team that is shooting the ball well, but shooting isn’t a very reliable statistic from game to game, things like rebounding and turnover margin are reliable indicators of future success. Shooting regression is going to come for this team. For the season, Vandy shot 42.3% from the field which ranks 304th and they made 34% of their threes, 198th. They actually only shot 71.1% from the free throw line which was 210th.
Vandy’s success is fake, it’s not real and it will not continue today. Texas A&M is 35th in adjusted defense and 31st in adjusted offense. Wade Taylor IV will dominate this game and the Aggies will cruise to the finals for the second straight season, just as long as Vanderbilt doesn’t make 50+% from three.
