Minnesota Vikings rookie Lewis Cine was carted off the field and taken to a London hospital after suffering a gruesome leg injury.

The NFL‘s international series kicked off its first game of the season on Sunday, but it didn’t take long for the action to come to a halt.

Minnesota Vikings rookie safety Lewis Cine was carted off the field in the second quarter after suffering a gruesome lower leg injury while covering a punt return. Cine appeared to come down awkwardly with his ankle seemingly buckling and then collapsing under the weight of his leg.

According to NFL Network’s sideline reporter Jamie Erdahl, Cine was transported to a local London hospital for further evaluation.

#Vikings first-round S Lewis Cine was already declared out with a leg injury and per @JamieErdahl he’s also being transported to a local hospital after a scary looking injury.

Unlike Amazon, which was widely criticized for its endless replays of the brain injury that Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa suffered on Thursday Night, the NFL Network crew didn’t show many replays of the injury to Cine.

One look and it’s easy to see why.

Lewis Cine suffers a devastating tibia and fibula fracture on this play. My concern is that it’s an open fracture so will likely get surgery in London to be washed out and stabilized. He is unfortunately out for the season. #Vikings #Skol https://t.co/pDz16xzbs6

Cine was a standout at Georgia, helping anchor a defense that will go down as one of the greatest in College Football history. That defense Cine was a part of also helped deliver a National Championship last season.

Minnesota drafted Cine with its first-round pick this past April, hoping he could be paired with Harrison Smith and do for the Vikings what he helped do for the Bulldogs.
