  • Mundine says Tszyu can surpass his father’s achievements

Anthony Mundine has outlined what Tim Tszyu needs to do if he is to surpass his legendary father Kostya’s achievements in the ring

Tszyu, 29, takes on former world champion Keith Thurman, 35, in Las Vegas on March 31, with many expecting the Aussie to triumph against his rival – who has not fought in two years.

Australian star Tszyu has the world at his feet and, if things fall into place, could be set for huge bouts against the sport’s biggest names.

That was the case for his father Kostya, too, who ended up losing his world title to Ricky Hatton after beating the likes of Julio César Chávez and Zab Judah.

Former champion Mundine says Tszyu should get past Thurman and must aim high after that.

‘Tim’s doing very well and he’s got a good fight against Thurman but Thurman’s been inactive, though, and I think he should beat him because of that and the size,’ Mundine told News Corp.

‘I reckon he’ll break him down and stop him late.

‘In order to beat dad he’s got to fight the top guys like (Terence) Bud Crawford but he’s willing to fight all those guys, he’s talked about even fighting Canelo (Alvarez).

‘That’s where he’s going to cement his legacy.’

Tszyu is on a collision course with Crawford, who has been linked with a super-fight against Canelo.

Mundine believes Aussie boxing is in a great place and he is enjoying watching the growth of a number of young guns.

‘Georgie Kambosos is doing his thing, Jai Opetaia, when he was a young fella, he used to come down the gym and spar,’ Mundine added.

‘I mean, I was there when they were young pups.

‘They all wanted to be ‘The Man’ and now they’re making their own statements and they’re being ‘The Man’ they wanted to be back in the day.

‘I keep up with the boys and like to see them having success.’
