Met Gala mania! With fashion’s biggest night right around the corner, over-the-top gowns, outrageous ensembles and show-stopping stilettos are the only thing on the brain.
The event, which is taking place on Monday, May 2, is sure to deliver a fabulous fashion fix — especially given the star-studded list of attendees.
While bits and pieces remain a surprise, it’s safe to say that the evening’s hosts, including Regina King, Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds and Lin-Manuel Miranda, will bring out all the style stops to saunter up the steps of The Met with this year’s theme, “In America: An Anthology of Fashion.” The co-chairs will be joined by Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, designer Tom Ford and Adam Mosseri.
So, as we anxiously await the jaw-dropping fashion that sure to delight at the event, Stylish decided to take a look back at the wildest ensembles ever worn to the so-called Super Bowl of fashion.
Outrageous looks have almost become an essential part of the big fashion event. With the imaginations of fashion’s most creative designers behind them, A-listers can — and do — show up in anything from buttless chaps to pope attire. But that’s what makes it so fun!
The “China: Through the Looking Glass” theme in 2015 brought forth some seriously wild looks. Sarah Jessica Parker arrived in a Philip Treacy headpiece and a custom H&M dress. Rihanna turned heads in a bright yellow Guo Pei Couture number that had a train over eight feet long. And you could hardly see Solange Knowles’ head peeking out of her structured Giles dress.
In 2017, the Met paid tribute to the avant-garde with the theme “Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between.” Kendall Jenner left very little to the imagination in a totally see-through Le Perla dress while Rihanna once again dominated the event in a Rei Kawakubo number.
Possibly the funkiest theme of all was 2019’s “Camp: Notes on Fashion.” From Katy Perry‘s re-imagined chandelier number and Tiffany Haddish’s Michael Kors sparkly suit to Cardi B’s Thom Browne mattress dress, it’s nearly impossible to narrow down the wild looks.
