  • Dillian Whyte has returned ‘adverse analytical findings’ in a VADA drugs test
  • As a result, Anthony Joshua vs Whyte on August 12 has been cancelled
  • Mail Sport understands Matchroom are looking for a new opponent for Joshua

Mail Sport understands Matchroom Boxing are working on a new opponent for Anthony Joshua following the cancellation of his upcoming bout with Dillian Whyte on August 12.

The rematch has been canned after Whyte ‘returned adverse analytical findings’ in a pre-fight drugs test carried out by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA).

A statement from Matchroom Boxing today (August 5) read: ‘Today, the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA) informed Matchroom, the Association of Boxing Commissions and the British Boxing Board of Control that Dillian Whyte had returned adverse analytical findings as part of a random anti-doping protocol.

‘In light of this news, the fight will be cancelled, and a full investigation will be conducted. Further information on the event will follow.’

However, Joshua could still remain on the card against a new opponent, according to sources.

Matchroom are exploring the possibility at the time of writing and could easily look to elevate one of the heavyweights on the undercard to a main event slot.

Filip Hrgovic and Demsey McKean are set to square off in the co-main event while Derek Chisora and Gerald Washington also feature on the bill.

Both Hrgovic and McKean were floated around as possible opponents for Joshua’s comeback fight following back-to-back losses to Oleksandr Usyk but ‘AJ’s’ team opted to go with Jermaine Franklin instead.
